Sunday 17 April 2011 saw the opening of the Regatta season for Loughborough crews. Leicester Regatta was held on a 700m stretch of the Grand Union Canal in the centre of the city. The Regatta commenced at 9am and a full day’s racing followed watched by fellow club members and spectators who enjoyed full access to the course from the canal tow path.
Loughborough Boat Club enjoyed an encouraging start to the season by securing two wins. The Intermediate (IM2) double scull crew of Jonathon Day and Tom Schofield achieved a convincing win over Lincoln displaying consistent style and form before defeating Boston in the final. The pair took full advantage of still water and glorious sunshine providing perfect rowing conditions, culminating in a fully deserved victory.
Next up the ladies intermediate (IM3) quad were matched against Burton Leander in a straight final. The crew of Lindsey Skinner, Zoe Poyner, Claire Hallam and Gill Hepworth were not to be outdone by their male counterparts. After a close start, Burton Leander held a narrow lead but the strength and determination of the Loughborough ladies shone through as they took the lead and powered over the finish line producing the club’s second win of the day.
