19.09.2021

Apologies: Jeff Hallam, Tara Johnson, John Scott, Matilda Haines, Jerry Heygate, Thomasin Storey, Zoe Hudson, Erica Gummery.

34 voting members present.

Opening Remarks:

SW reflected on the past year and the running of the club, giving thanks to Allen, Vick and Nadine with the online circuit sessions. Remarked that it has been good to see so much has been able to happen over the last 18 months and now back to competitions including most recently, Bradford where there were wins for the club. Noted that maintenance has been carried out around the club by Keith and Neil at a cost of £1590 to improve what has been done by others over the years. All new members who have joined following the latest introduction to rowing course were officially welcomed.

Accounts:

JC gave an overview of the accounts, in the 2020 year, there was an overall £5000 excess with a £15,000 spent on the needed sewage works and a £10,000 grant to subsidise the club which was used for membership refunds.

Question raised over the third ‘trustees/savings’ account that has held around £11,000 in it for a number of years. Account originated with a lottery grant and needed to show that money was being saved for future. Requirement if this time limit has passed to be checked, then account balance to be sent and closed.

Acceptance of accounts proposed by Nick Maker and seconded by Mary Carswell.
Accounts accepted by 33, one abstention.

Subscription Proposal:

Retrospective acceptance of proposal as previously emailed and below. Fees to stay at the 2020-2021 amounts.

Acceptance of subscriptions proposed by Mike Targett and seconded by Scott Ferris

SW gave thanks to all the work TI has put in over his time as Captain and in very trying years. Notably, applause given to the move to have own shoes and the BAT logic system in boats, the booking system recently implemented and the general overall hard work and time.

Question on how the coaching welfare and safety representative role works. Stated that they are voice for all those in coaching, welfare and safety roles and is not a lead/head coach.

A.O.B:

Hi-vis tops

Question asked about wearing hi-vis clothing when out on the water, whether this is a club rule and if not, could it become one. Stated that this is advice, strongly recommended and as per BR RowSafe. Currently this is not a rule and if it was to become a rule, there would have to be disciplinary actions to take against anyone not following the rule and/or causing an incident because of not wearing hi-vis.
Query over where insurance would fall if there was an incident involving someone not wearing hi-vis.

Suggestion to purchase hi-vis tops for all to share was given as well as general encouragement for members to wear something conspicuous.

Noted that general guidance given to all members, especially new members would be welcomed.

Pointed out that regardless of how well lit up or in hi-vis clothing a crew is, if others are not keeping a good look out, they safety measures serve no purpose. Members reminded also to keep to circulation well and to call “Ahead” loudly when other crews are seen.

Discussion to follow in committee meeting.

Senior section

Request for the committee to explore possibilities to develop a senior section at the club for members 20-30 years old.

Coxes

Request if the club could advertise for coxes. Noted that other clubs have tried this unsuccessfully and that it is better to invite cox-type people down to the club and train properly.

Erg room

Request for update on erg room. As per last committee meeting minutes, feedback of pre-application has been received and the group are working through suggested guidance.

LSRC

Request for information on LSRC timings

LSRC times are:

  • 12:00 onwards at the weekend
  • 14:00 on a Wednesday afternoon
  • 10:00 onwards at weekend where LSRC members may be invited by LBC members to row as composite (min. 1) or for sparring.
  • Other times LSRC members may use access facility using boats in the agreement

Query over access to gym and land training. LSRC and SD have access to gym at all non-LBC times. Reminded that SD have gym priority 5pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Details to be communicated.

Winter training

Request for information on winter training as this will start in the coming weeks. As per previous committee meeting minutes when raised, proposal to continue running some virtual circuits or hybrid circuits. Options to be explored with the members.

Night rowing

Question if night rowing is allowed and with multiple boats.

Yes, so long as boats are coxed with a competent cox and lights are used. Recommended, but not required, that the catamaran is out with crews as this is fitted with lights.
